Our promise to families is ambitious academics, engaged students, and balanced lives. Our students thrive in the classroom, on the athletic field, in art studios, on stage, as classmates, as friends, and as members of the Trevor community. A major factor in this success is that we partner with our families to promote balance in our students’ - and their parents’- busy lives. You really can have it all in one place here: a stellar academic program, outstanding arts and electives, competitive athletic teams, and friends for life, all housed in a world-class facility that is open to students from 7:30 am to 6:00 pm. To highlight just a few of the components of our program that make us unique in the city of New York…
The Trevor faculty is second to none in serving both as teachers and advisors. They are specialists in their fields of study who share their expertise in the classroom, and they advise students on all aspects of school life outside of the classroom. To ensure easy access to the faculty in both of these capacities, teachers’ desks line the perimeter of our Common Room on the 5th floor, and student schedules include work periods in that space. Students can complete assignments, meet with their teachers and advisor, read a good book, or catch up with a friend over a game of chess. No matter what students choose to do, adults are there to give advice, answer questions, reflect with students about their choices, and sometimes just listen patiently. A bonus feature of the Common Room is that our students get to see their teachers in action as they do their own work and collaborate with their colleagues.
In the classroom you will see students engaged in constructing a body of knowledge and practicing a set of skills that will serve them into adulthood. They might be sitting in the round or in groups or pairs. They might be solving math problems at the board, interpreting primary sources in history, annotating a class novel, deliberating over the meaning of a phrase in a poem, writing an essay, researching an historical event, dissecting specimens, building models, conducting experiments, or conversing in French, Spanish, and Mandarin. Students learn to take Cornell notes by hand and how to create slideshow presentations on Google Workspace. No matter the discipline, students ask questions of their teachers and classmates as they pursue greater understanding. Intellectual curiosity and independent thinking are hallmarks of our students, and we value both good questions and thoughtful answers, knowing that every answer leads to another question.
Walk the halls of our campus, and you will see the other elements of student life on display. Student artwork lines the walls, and no two pieces are the same. Pop by the dance studio to witness student choreography in action, listen to our music ensembles rehearsing on the 2nd floor, or enjoy one of the drama productions in our theatre. Stop by one of our gym spaces and catch our students playing a casual game of pick-up basketball during the lunch hour or competing fiercely in a match after school. On every floor you can admire stunning views of New York City and soak up the natural light that infuses every space in our building.
Trevor is a truly remarkable place for our students and our families. I hope that you enjoy learning more about us online and that you will come see us in action!
