Science Curriculum

Scientific inquiry is central to the Trevor curriculum from the earliest grade levels. In Lower School we make a wide introduction to science, focusing on observations, asking questions, and learning the scientific method through hands-on and fun activities. In Middle School, the curriculum advances the scientific method at a higher level of sophistication, and deepens the  mastery of lab skills and analysis. In the Upper School, Trevor’s signature Coordinated Science program [link] not only educates on each core science, it illuminates the connections between each science, leading to deeper understanding in advanced electives. In core courses and electives offered across all four grades, students further develop lab techniques, scientific literacy, and experimental design.

Signature Trevor

The department aims to inspire a love of science and a connection to the field in the Trevor student community. Faculty bring an unbridled enthusiasm for science and deep well of knowledge into the classroom, the Science Center, clubs, and in mentorship throughout independent projects and the exploration of higher ed options.

  • ITEM 1

Offers a highly unique three-year course of study that focuses on two sciences per academic year. This coordinated approach offers students an understanding of the core principles behind each science and the many connections between them.
  • ITEM 2

Takes learning outside of the classroom with key partners including Billion Oyster Project, Black Rock Forest, Brooklyn Grange, DNA Learning Center, and Wild Bird Fund.
  • ITEM 3

Partners with NYU on cutting-edge neuroscience studies, and Trevor students have been a part of published research.

Department Mission Statement

Trevor’s Science Department develops students as scientific thinkers who question, observe, experiment, and solve problems. Through hands-on, inquiry-based activities and collaborative work, we strive to promote a life-long interest in science in every student.

Faculty

The science faculty teach from inquiry-based perspectives, frequently activate hands-on learning and deep investigation, and seek to develop a life-long love of science in its students. Trevor takes advantage of its faculty’s diversified backgrounds, both at the academic and industry levels, so that the coordinated course sequence and course electives are inspired by both passion and expertise. The 9th-floor Science Center is a dynamic space where students are encouraged to ask questions, take classroom thinking to the next level, and develop collaborative skills. It is an atmosphere that fosters meaningful student-teacher interactions and agency in conversing with adults.

College Ready

Having completed their course of study in science, Trevor students consistently “wow” in their college studies. Strength in collaborative work, problem solving, developing experiments, analyzing data, thinking both critically and originally, and taking risks without fear of failure equip Trevor graduates to thrive in college laboratories and beyond. The insights gained through Trevor’s coordinated science program offers a distinct advantage when entering multilayered college level courses like biochemistry, ecology, or bioengineering. Furthermore, Trevor students who pursue an Environmental Science Concentration are uniquely prepared for advanced science study in college and academic and professional trajectories that will positively impact this crucial field and our world.
