World Language Curriculum

Communication and cultural authenticity are at the heart of Trevor’s World Languages program. Our goal is to educate citizens of a global culture, using culturally authentic materials and activities to put language in its true context and to give students a perspective on the people who speak it. Lower School students are taught the Spanish language, as they simultaneously learn about the people and countries where the language is spoken, including the history, traditions, customs, music, and geographies. In Middle and Upper School, students can choose between French, Mandarin, and Spanish. In each of these world languages, faculty aim for fluency in both the spoken and written word, as well as a cultural fluency about the countries where the language is spoken.

Signature Trevor

Students don’t just learn a world language, they learn about many different subjects and themes using a world language. Our courses include art, literature, cinema, history, music, gastronomy, and popular culture.

Department Mission Statement

Trevor’s World Languages Department aims to foster a culture of diversity and inclusion that facilitates language acquisition. It is our goal to educate individuals that understand and respect cultural diversity as citizens of the world.

Faculty

Among the many qualities of Trevor’s World Languages faculty are a passion for lifelong learning, accessibility inside and outside of the classroom, and empathy. These skilled educators use Communicative Language Teaching, total physical response (TPR), story-telling, inquiry-based methodologies, and applicable technologies to emphasize real-life communication and interaction, focusing on developing communicative competence in conjunction with linguistic accuracy. The Center is often used for informal conversations in the target language and for one-on-one speaking assessments. The Center strengthens relationships between world language students and their teachers.

College Ready

Having completed their course of study in one or more world language, Trevor graduates have a sharpened intellect, enhanced decision-making, stronger communication skills, expanded executive functioning, and a wider global perspective. Trevor graduates who continue their study of a world language in college are most often placed in a higher level language class than other first-year students.
